Web Page Design Considerations

Designing a web page for SEO

The following ideas are a summary of what goes into the design of a truly Search Engine Optimized web page for the WWW. This outline is not intended to describe in great detail how to design a web page but will give general rules concerning the inner operation considerations.

Meta Keywords: When creating a web page for any reason you must think Keywords. These keywords may or may not be used by a search engine but the list will be the outline for your text creation. Write down the keywords that best describe the page you are working on first. When compiling the Keyword list be loose and a free associate. (Remember the old English grammar classes where you outlined your work before starting to write it down - well the Keyword list is the basis for constructing your page content.) You are allowed to use 800 characters (including spaces and comas) or less in this Meta space. A well planed list of keywords may not be used by the search engine but it will focus you when preparing the content of your page. Never list a word more than twice in the keyword list. e.g. , here meta appears five times and that is too many times.

Meta Title: The meta title tag is very important as it is the primary listing line in a search engines listing as well as displayed in the top of most browsers and also used as the words to describe your page in most search engines along with your description as well as being used when someone adds your web site to their "Favorites" or "Bookmarks" lists. A title should be specific as to your page content and limited to 60 characters. It should include some of your most important keywords and be absent of extraneous words such as the, a, an, etc. Make your title compelling. The title and page heading of your web page is important because they are probably the first things the visitor sees.

Meta Description: The meta description will appear in the search engines listing below the meta title so it must be concise and to the point as it will distinguish you from the rest of the sites doing the same thing you are doing. Limit your description to 200 characters but be sure that you use the first 150 characters (including spaces and punctuation) as that is all that will be shown in most important search engine's display of your page.

Page Header: Here is where the page title can be embellished a little and contain some a, an, the etc. It should contain a few of your most important keywords and be very similar to your title. It should be a "H1" element to give it a higher importance.

Page Content Is Important: No matter what you write, keep in mind that it has the potential to reach a large audience and be beneficial to your company beyond any SEO benefits. Blogs, articles and on-site content are a chance to link your company to useful, interesting information about your industry. Well-written copy about intriguing topics is also more likely to be linked and shared by outsiders -- increasing your page rank as well.

Stay on Topic: It's easy to write around a topic and begin drifting into tangents that are unrelated to your topic. Keep in mind that this is business writing and not a personal blog! While it's OK to have some personality in your writing, your focus should always be on the meta title and meta description you are writing about.

Spelling: search engines do check spelling. In any professional endeavor it the person or search engine sees spelling mistakes you will be dinged as not being professional. Spelling and Grammar will show Google and other search engines that it is professional and well-structured, leading to higher placements. You should also put the most compelling information up front.
Original Content: Search engines will punish sites that publish duplicate content that already exists online. Make sure that your content is fresh and original instead of just "copying and pasting" content from some existing sources.
Flash & Images: Having pertinent images and Flash content relevant to your content will grab the reader's attention. They will add nothing to the SEO but will (picture is worth a thousand words - Flash may be worth a million words) help you explain your topic more clearly. Size your images to a relatively fast loading size.
